WJE, as part of the architect/engineer design team, served as fire protection engineer and code consultant for this new early bag storage (EBS) building at a large international airport in the USA. Due site limitations, the new EBS had to be located immediately adjacent to an existing, multi-leveled, unsprinklered open air public parking garage, with all portions of the new EBS being build on an elevated podium structure that straddles the main airport roadway, approximately 39 feet (11.89 meters) below. The EBS building is an enclosed storage building that sits on the podium, and rises more than 50 feet (27.38 meters) in height above the podium. Within the EBS building is the automated early bag storage system consisting primarily of inbound and outbound conveyor systems, automated rack storage associated support and maintenance functions.
